Observations:

        Observations:
- Channel Condition two dams along the segment lead to aggradation water level low due to electric company usage, 3 inch depth. Excessive litter most of the channel is natural, two walls appear on the left side unable to evaluate; segment 4 is dammed; segment 3 is a natural channel with no floodplain (gorge); segment 2 is unknown; segment 1- steep banks, natural  two distinctly different zones: 1) all mature forested buffer 300 to 1000 ft. deep on N/W side for entire length of stream segment, except for extreme downstream portion 2) on S/E in 1st part downstream, a road parallels creek closely, then town forested land/open space land with forested buffer 300+ feet deep, than further upstream to upper end of segment; all residential backyards varying from well forested buffer in some areas to completely mowed turf lawns with some undercutting banks w/ erosion, sedimentation noted, 3 drainage pipes noted natural channel with forested buffers in most of segment, but channelization reported significant just above and below I-84 bridge (impaired site - RO); therefore considered extreme upper section of this segment for impaired evaluation; note also heavy rip-rap installed on S/E side only for ~200 yards downstream of I-84 bridge this section of the stream is heavily forested with very little man-made alterations may have been some alteration in past, Rt. 9 overpass with bridge abutments; However, there is tree buffer on both sides, entire stretch This does not include the dam   Imp-A= 10; Imp-B= 10; Imp-C = 10; Imp-D = 10; Helin Rd = 10 2 car bridges, 1 railroad bridge stream meanders with diverse flow, mounds & log structures contain flood waters channel is not confined, flooding is frequent in area of fern meadow in partially blocked channel only one place of flow directed by stone wall-on property posted by "Greenberg" at farthermost upstream end of segment
channelization on Stormville Rd.; questionable near hayfield
bridge structure at the beginning, but it doesn't significantly effect channel. Overflow structure trough, has deposited lots of cobbles in the stream, altering flow. Rest of channel is okay. very natural meandering channel lower = 10, next = 10, rec. center = 10, pool area = 7; rock dam to divert water into public pool, which is chlorinated; water then returns to stream   - Channel Condition
- Hydrology no real evidence of a floodplain; dams probably prevent flood flow; there was a small segment just above 1st dam that indicates floodplain electric company lowering water levels to produce electricity lower 1/4 almost never floods, but upper 3/4 floods every 1.5 to 2 years no floodplain seen = 1 2 distinct zones: 1) on NW side creek floods yearly onto floodplain but deeper to shallow channel incision noted in various areas 2) on S/E side terrain generally higher elevation + rarely floods, but numerous lower areas with regular flooding onto floodplain, medium to deeper channel incision noted in many places and shallower incision in other areas two distinct zones: 1) on N/W side, creek floods yearly onto floodplain with some channel incision noted where steeper banks noted 2) on S/E side creek, half is higher elevation and rarely floods other areas flood yearly to floodplain; moderate channel incision noted in other areas one side is deeply incised, the other is not but has a large floodplain construction may have impacted floodplain but channel is about 10 feet down the side of the banks floods at least yearly; There is channel incision from natural process over time known fact: stream floods at least once a year Imp-A = 10; Imp-B = 10; Imp-C = 10; Imp-D = 10; Helin Rd = 10 section by (Rt) 376 floods several times every year; clear section by Rec. floods every 3-5 yrs frequent flooding into wet meadow where several pools exist possibly year round extensive flooding along previous channel, flooding cabins & floodplain to Carpenter Rd.;
houses on Creek Bend (Road) have flood water up to doorstep
flooding occurs frequently in area of former channels through wet fern meadow below Central Hudson power lines. heavy flooding extends channel to Carpenter Rd., flooding of Hopewell Manor cabins was extensive in 1999 saw no clear evidence to indicate how often flooding occurs

many floodplains lower = 10, next = 10, rec. center = 10, pool area = 10 some flooding on north end of segment near point 1; small and very limited floodplains on most of segment - Hydrology
- Riparian Zone natural vegetation about 1/2 as tall as stream is wide in 3 of 4 segments   all banks are shale (bedrock - RO) segment 1- 8, seg. 2- not seen, probably 8, seg. 3- 8, seg. 4 - 4 1) N/W side, all except extreme lowest downstream part of segment which is residential with mowed lawns, 100% of remainder vast majority of segment is 100% large, mature forested open space
 2) S/W side- some residential backyards are mown lawn all way
to creek with no remaining forested buffer, approx. 80% of segment on average has significant forested buffer intact
on NW side, entirely extensive mature forested largely intact buffer zone; on SE side, residential lawns mowed to creek in sections with yard furniture, etc; other areas have intact buffers   Buffer is about 4-40 ft on either side of a fifty-sixty foot channel width; Trees, shrubs and heavy undergrowth, poison ivy, jewelweed, mustard garlic, saplings, etc. (are present) majority of vegetation is older growth with some undergrowth in 25% of length on north (left) side   Imp-A =10 except for yard; Imp-B = 10; Imp-C = ~10; Helin Rd = 9 1 - 2 active channel width of nat. veg.; the main exception was at the E.F. Rec.,where there was grass to the stream edge and behind the town bldgs., where there was maybe 1 width of very high bank + then parking lots and roads large 3 acre wet meadow under Central Hudson power lines; lack of understory trees some elderberries & viburnum; invasive garlic mustard, barberry and buckthorn
no purple loosestrife in bloom sited in creek
Hopewell Manor buffers both sides of stream with 31 acres, largely in floodplain. This includes 10 acres of woods, 3 acres grass, meadow and 3 acres of wet (ostrich, shuttlecock fern) meadow with Joe Pye weed, milkweed, large bur reed understory trees are scarce with remnants on upland ridges that contain dogwoods, Viburnium prunifolium, Lindera benzoin and redbud elderberries; extensive carpeting of Asarum canadense, invasive barberry, garlic mustard, small patches of roadside purple loosestrife

good buffer on one side, at least 2x width. Bad buffer on other side, averages about stream width. very nice buffer except for a few short segments lower = 5, next =10, rec. center = 9, pool area = 5 most of segment is 10; a few impaired sites have little or no buffer zone - Riparian Zone
- Bank Stability minimal evidence of bank erosion, 2 places are documented as impaired sites due to erosion
water is green and murky for last 1/4 of section, stagnant but no bad smells sections observed - 8 in residential areas where mowed lawns extend all way to creek in some areas with no forested buffers intact, often steep, eroding undercut banks, also note upper pennisula on N/W side on map, stream has cut thru peninsula (~ 20 % flow) creating an island  Resident Bob Marshall (20 + years) testifies this cut thru peninsula has existed as long as he's known it some residential areas have mowed lawns to water with associated steep, eroding, undercut banks; other areas may be relatively stable but huge spikes inflow potential are impacting 100% forested stream banks as well as in numerous areas   Animal paths along banks and edge of stream; steep banks with exposed roots, some severely eroded banks bank erosion; lawn tractor buried under 95% of stream bed does not clear rapidly, otherwise definition for #7 is appropriate Imp-A = 2; Imp-B = 3; Imp-C = 4; Imp-D = 4; Helin Rd =5 lots of overhanging vegetation + bends, some big trees fallen and about to fall worst section of erosion was just downstream of Martin Rd near red house with blue trim fallen trees, exposed roots, bank erosion, blocked channels eroded banks, fallen trees, history of extensive flooding (1999) only appreciable erosion is approximately 1/2 way thru segment where 2 adjoining property ownerscleared riparian down to bank and have lawn rather than vegetation (noted as impaired site)     major bank instability at one spot, eroding bluffs are 18' to 20' high. Erosion prevalent throughout. very nice banks, except for a few short spans lower = 7, next =7, rec. center = 7, pool area = 3 a gorge is cut in bedrock between points 2 and 3; a few places near southern end of segment have bank erosion partially stabilized by tree roots (large sycamores and other hardwoods) - Bank Stability
- Water Appearance clarity of water was fairly good overall Black and cloudy, smells of raw sewage; (I believe this refers to IMP A- R.O.) many of the banks have a strange looking string-like plant often red or orange section 1- 8, section 2- unknown, section 3- 1, section 4- 3 caveat: ~ 12+ hour post 1.5 in. rainfall approx. 1 1/2" rain within previous 12-15 hours; (probably impacted water clarity -RO)   Water appears very clear, some algae growing on rocks where water slows in deeper pools definition of number 7 (the score) but stream is slow and clear plant growth to approximately 1/2 distance of dam to bridge Imp-A = 7; Imp-B = 10; Imp-C =7; Imp-D =10; Helin Rd = 7
turbidity varies, there is a narrow trail of suds from upstream sewer pipe opposite Augusta Drive on Beekman Rd. in section 2 generally cloudy green water with a steady flow of suds below sewer pipe, stream clears considerably below series of small ledge drop diversions & moves quickly over gravel & cobble past 2 islands; no odor, no oil sheen
one area has algae growth with foam water very clear, but some cloudiness due to sediment or algae.
lower = 10, next =10, rec. center = 10, pool area =10 fairly clear; foam floating on water in some places - Water Appearance
- Nutrient Enrichment up by leaking sewer manhole there was an abundance of aquatic vegatation; (this was in the impoundment upstream of the upper dam - R.O.) strange colored rotted plant life emitting a bad odor (this refers to tree roots- R.O.) growing rampant; (this is small, capillary roots of trees - RO) section 1- 8, section 2- unknown, section 3- 1, section 4- 3 to 4 significant algae noted in many areas Much algae noted in many areas; Especially weed-choked for ~ 200+ yards downstream from I-84 bridge in channelized sections with greater exposure to sun

very little aquatic growth Brinckerhoff dam Imp-A = 9; Imp-B =10; Imp-C = 9; Imp-D = 10; Helin Rd =9 saw very little aquatic growth and algal growth water quality varies independent of weather, algal growth increases upstream algae more prominent above Carpenter Rd. bridge, creek runs clear downstream from diversion/ dam; Fanwort? Elodia?; water clarity varies greatly with weather and possibly with sewage clean outs

algal growth on substrates. Not widespread. some growth on substrate lower= 10, next = 10, rec. center = 10, pool area = 10 abundant aquatic plants in Furnace Pond (curly leaf pondweed, eurasian watermilfoil, etc.), algae growing on rocks in the stream - Nutrient Enrichment
- Barriers to Fish Movement 1st dam was 7 ft. drop, 2nd dam was approximately 20 ft. drop water level lowered to supply electricity, dam and downed trees  one dam plus one less than 1 riverwide drop section 1- 8, section 2- unknown, section 3- 10, section 4 -1 approximately 100 yds downstream of segment is Texaco dam (large drop) and approx. 2+miles downstream is Beacon dam at old dyeworks with large drop. Each would totally prevent fish migration up/downstream, within segment, there are no barriers no barriers within segment itself, but note Texaco dam approx 1 1/2 mi. downstream and Beacon dam approx 2-3 mi. downstream, each presents impossible obstacle to fish movement; distances exagerated, eg Texaco dam is less than a half mile downstream - RO) some blowdown that crossed entire stretch near Clove Creek but may not impede fish movement no barriers in this section; however there is a dam at Brinckerhoff and in Beacon Brinkerhoff Dam, total blockage difficult to see due to depth and turbidity Imp-A = 10; Imp-B = 10; Imp-C = 10; Imp-D = 10; Helin Rd = 10 saw lots of minnows to legal size trout, numerous fallen trees that did not completely block stream no barriers natural diversions within stream with ledge drops under 1 ft., water levels rarely drop to impede fish passage, dam eroded and water moves over and around one stone wall with 1/2 foot drop (large waterfalls = impaired site); ( 2nd large dam exists at the S end of segment- RO) (1/2 foot drop appears to be bedrock- RO)     one old structure may block movement during low water conditions. Some areas of low water.
lower =10, next =10, rec. center = 10, pool area = 5 2 dams on this stream segment, plus and additional dam about 50 ft. north of this segment - Barriers to Fish Movement
- Instream Fish Cover there were pools, riffles and boulders/cobbles and logs available in stream for habitat  portions of stream are dried up   section 1- 5, section 2- unknown, section 3- 5, section 4- 3 primarily large logs, overhanging vegetation, deeper pools, undercut root mats mostly large logs, woody debris, deep pools, overhanging vegetation, undercut banks with root mats, backwater pools   no undercut banks or thick root mats or floating vegetation
Imp-A = 5; Imp-B = 5; Imp-C = 5; Imp-D = 5; Helin Rd = 5 saw all but thick root mats, dense beds of veg.and isolated pools all habitat types are present all habitat types present; large island with tall grass below diversions is ideal habitat for waterfowl nest objects visible to approximately 1 to 1.5 ft.- brownish-green color, slight film on rocks and more on logs     Large trout found here in March/April, then mostly small bass and suckers. very nice pools with overhanging vegetation; trout and suckers seen during the walk lower = 8, next = 8, rec. center = 3, pool area = 5 Furnace Pond may also be a habitat with dense vegetation - Instream Fish Cover
- Pools below the 1st dam, there were definite pools; couldn't assess pools above the 1st dam as it appeared to not have pools; the stream at that point is fairly wide (~50 ft) + slow moving     section 1- 1, section 2- unknown, section 3- 10, section 4- 8 however - extensive sedimentation present sedimentation may be filling in pools to some significant extent   We have some very deep, obscure pools in sections  6-8 available pools; difficult to evaluate due to turbidity of water first half is # 1, second half is #3 (this area is more than 50' wide, should be NA - RO) Imp-A- some shallow and deep pools; Imp-B - some shallow pools;Imp-C - some deep pools; Imp-D - some shallow pools; Helin Rd - some deep pools numerous small pools too deep to wade in depth reaches 7 ft. at outer bend upstream from fern meadow; swimhole has pools 12-15 ft. deep several deep swimming holes 10-15 ft. deep; pools diverse through Hopewell Manor section and more on logs (olive-green color)     Not many pools in this segment. One decent one, about 4 ft. deep, holds fish year round. many pools along meandering portions, probably average about 11 x 5 ft. lower = 6, next = 5, rec. center = 5, pool area = 5 abundant deep pools in the gorge area; fewer and shallower pools in other areas
- Pools
- Insect / Invertebrate Habitat there were cobbles in some portions of our segment; site 2 - 50% embedded, 40% cobbled bottom with 40% sand and with evidence of caddis fly larvae
site 2- 50% embedded, 40% cobble, bottom 60% sand with evidence of caddisfly larvae

section 1- 8, sect. 2- unknown, sect. 3- 3 (?), section 4- 1 (not visible) large numbers of submerged logs throughout segment very many large submerged and emergent logs
a variety of habitat types exist; riffle areas contain gravel and cobbles and often in deeper section downed logs and other woody debris are present
much rip-rap near bridge Imp-A = 7; Imp-B = 7; Imp-C =7; Imp-D =7; Helin Rd = 10 little bit of everything mayflies, water spiders, various larvae present in large numbers; old fallen logs, hollow trees, submerged logs, cobble, boulders, gravel present all habitat types present in the Hopewell Manor section

- Canopy Cover our segment was the mouth of the FC and canopy cover was
< 40% of stream channel
section 1- 8, sect. 2- prob. 8, sect. 3 and 4- width greater than 50 ft. However, greater than 50 ft. wide stream throughout segment; there is very good intact forest canopy, overhanging banks in the intact forested areas but little if any at all in mowed residential lawn sections > 50 ft. wide stream; although good mature forest overhanging where buffer has been allowed to remain, small amount of mowed residential lawn areas noted most of the channel is over 50 ft, at times narrow to less than 50 ft., in which case there is full canopy cover, average in this section < 50 ft. active channel is greater than 50 ft. for most of this section
  Imp-A = 8; Imp-B = 10; Imp-C = 10; Imp-D = 10; Helin Rd = 10
except along rec. fields excluding wet meadow, stream has heavy shade- 40% canopy lessens in fern marsh; the abundant canopy thins as you move upstream beyond the Carpenter Rd. bridge.
most of the channel is about 50' wide   lower = 5, next =10, rec. center = 10, pool area = 5 southern portion of segment is heavily forested
- Canopy Cover
- Embeddedness along the upper reaches of our segment we did not encounter a good amount of cobbles; the portion that was cobbled was 50% embedded
very few areas in which this score would apply, as only one significant stretch of riffles shortly above Jean Van Pelt park close toOld Town Rd. at beginning of segment. Other deeper, slower areas are deeply sedimented  only one area to evaluate with minimal riffles over shallow gravel beds     riffling of streambed evident in approx. 6 places along segment   Imp-A = NA; Imp-B = NA; Imp-C = NA; Imp-D = NA; Helin Rd = NA
lots of silt at end of creekside- where clearing for construction, seemed to be more silt upstream
cobbles at area below diversion/dam few or no riffles         lower = 10, next = 10, rec. center = 10, pool area = 8 30% embeddedness at north end; pt.1 ranges from 20-40 %; pt. 2- 30-40%; pt. 4- 20-30% - Embeddedness
